Why do we have such a toxic culture of making work “fun”?? What the hell is wrong with people? Why can’t we just do work, go home and have your own kind of fun with other people you enjoy being around???

Because your corporate overlords believe that if you can build a connection to your workplace and colleagues, they can guilt you into producing more value for less pay out of some misguided sense of loyalty. A job is a transaction. They don’t give a shit about you, you don’t need to give a shit about them.

But I’m afraid they’ve been wildly misinformed by the HR overlords or whomever on ‘how to get employees to build a connection to the workplace and colleagues’ cringe

An idea was floated by HR that each team should make a video (to put on our intranet) explaining what we do and how we fit into the organisation.

The kicker - it should have been a music video!!! Everyone loves to sing on camera!!

Thankfully upper management put an end to it quickly, but it went way further than it should have.

We’re talking about HR here, so definitely not.

I should note that there were a few teams that very actually disappointed that this didn’t eventuate.

Those team members have been reported to ASIO as potential spies

I’m just not sold on the effectiveness…the best cultures I’ve worked in I feel like it all comes quite organically because you like the people they get you and you get along well together. No amount of forcing people to party in a room will achieve that.

I like to make work fun for myself because I have to spend so much time on it. But forcing it to be fun for the whole team is just small minded groupthink. Especially when it comes from the minds of soulless and cynical HR departments

It’s made from other people’s code, I just had to add the specific variables and work out how to actually run it - which starting from absolutely no knowledge has been pretty hard. If I knew what I was doing it would probably be fairly easy!

If you want to look at it the code I used is on GitHub. Search Lemmy Bot for the main code, and Lemmy Frank Bot for the specific posting bits. I had to strip out the sections to pin posts as they were not working, possibly because of the change to version 18 on Lemmy as that’s not been updated since the change.

Good but like antsy in that “it’s something new and I don’t like change” kind of way? Also it’s like a decision and an important one, so there’s all that additional anxious excited feeling attached too!

But all positive. This is just me going through the ‘omg change’ phase I think. Just need to sit and get used to the idea for a little bit 😅

Ultimately think hard about why are you wanting to get married. What will it add to your relationship that you don’t already have.

I’m quite blase about marriage. I just don’t think it proves anything. I know lots of people in horrible marriages though so maybe that’s why.

It’s not the commitment it once was though. Now a mortgage or kids is where shit starts to get real.

One of my friends was just talking about Heartstopper and while I haven’t watched it because I just don’t really care for a show with a cast of teens, it got me thinking about how lucky young LGBT people are these days in terms of content they can watch and see themselves in. When myself and my generation were coming out and looking for media that represented us it was all very full on, and stuffed to the brim with sexual content, a lot of it truly dubious. My friends and I at the time just didn’t understand how incredibly damaging watching that stuff could be for us as teens. I don’t know, just got me deep into thinking about how not just myself but my friends maybe wouldn’t have engaged in some risky shit had we had shows and movies that showed healthy age appropriate stuff.

Related off note, but I thought about the OG UK Queer as Folk, and how I thought 15 year old Nathan banging grown arse Stuart wasn’t that bad. Adult me is mortified, but I think about how those old shows were all my friends and I had so of course we thought yeah that’s how it is, that’s what we should want and how we should behave.

I dont usually get deep on here, but I just can’t stop thinking about it now.

I’m in that weird section where being LGBTQIA+ was accepted but still sort of looked down upon (like I grew up learning to say “that’s gay” whenever something bad happened or something I didn’t like happen, if that helps put a stamp on when I grew up). And I love Heartstopper, I actually just finished reading the first two volumes of it and I watched the show when it came out. But admittedly, I am slightly jealous that kids nowdays can see representation on tv, and not just gay and straight people, but bisexual characters, pansexual, trans and nonbinary. If I had the language I have now that would’ve helped me as a kid.

But ultimately, I am so happy that kids are now getting tv shows and movies where they can see themselves. I just hope that for us 25+ and older can get some representation. I want to see more elder LGBTQIA+ folks on my screens. Because, I mean as you would know, so many of our elder died unnecessarily because the government didn’t care about us. We’ve lost so much history. And being able to see old LGBTQIA+ folks means that we’re here. And that we can grow old and beautiful.

I’ve felt weird about how I’m not even 30 and my hair is greying, but I watched some TikToks where elder queers have said “Grey means you’re here”. And as a queer person with depression, I take that to heart.

We must be a similar age, growing up (especially in Brisbane) I still had bullies and things weren’t great but for the most part people left me alone.

I do enjoy seeing so many of the letters present these days, at the time I was coming to terms with being bisexual it was still very much a pick a side mentality from both sides.

I also agree some more content with older LGBT for would be great, especially as my friends and I transition into the next phase of settling in life.

31yo nb bi (lol)… there is still a ‘pick a side’ mentality from both Ls and Gs (edit: and the Ss) today. To me, labelling myself bisexual means I am attracted to people with my genitals, and people who don’t have my genitals. Like-me and not-like-me. Binary.

everyone is hot, is really my point.

edit: not like, actually have my genitals, but, yknow, people who have genitals like mine and people who have genitals that aren’t like mine. Have I typed genitals enough? Probably. Did I think of that ridiculous song ‘show me your genitals’? Yes I did.

You know what’s wild, is that there are bisexuals who say that pansexuals are just biphobic or have internalised biphobia. Nah man, I just like pansexual, but I dig tf out of the bi flag. I like to think that pan means attracted to people regardless of gender. And I don’t have a definition for bi because it’s up to how the bi person identifies.

I love my bisexual siblings, y’all are amazing.

We as queers shouldn’t be so divided against each other; we are many different colours but we are all part of the rainbow flag, because there is strength in kindness and numbers. Bi and pan are both part of the spectrum that is our human experience, and whatever label we identify with shouldn’t stand in the way of us standing up for each other in face of discrimination. We cannot let labels divide us - that is exactly what the ultra-conservatives, far-right extremists, and cookers want. It makes it easier for them to kill us off if we do most of the work for them.

Bs who hate on Ps, or Ts, or anyone really, are pieces of shit like any other bigot. Bs ought to know what it is like to be invisible, they shouldn’t be perpetuating the cycle of hate and exclusion. Ugh.

I’ve just realized why I’m over this job. This was supposed to be exciting. Managing shit. Helping people. Fixing things. But I’m so busy filling in god damn spreadsheets and checking off things on a list to do anything about actually fixing or improving things… Its basically just become an admin assistant. What the hell am I even doing here?! Booked myself in for an Azure fundamentals course next week. I’m pretty adept at Azure already, but I tried to study for the bigger certificate and got a bit overwhelmed so im gonna try get the basic certification and then build momentum from there.

Do you think its a requirement that to work for Linkt you have to get a lobotomy? Or do they exclusively hire people with single digit IQ? I traveled early June, noticed my tag didn’t beep so I got home, logged a replacement tag, they go “No worries, we wont charge you for any tolls for the proceeding couple of days and until your new tag is confirmed received”. Want to guess what I just received in the mail? If you guessed a toll invoice I have bad news for you: You are clearly too smart to work for Linkt. I try to be patient with call center staff, its not their fault they work for soul sucking corporations. But man we are 35 minutes in and they are still trying to tell me it is a valid invoice.

Hard day. Baby hasn’t been well. I keep getting irrationally angry at my partner too because I’m freaked out and projecting. If you have a car, then put the baby in a carrycot and drive bub around the block a few times. This really helps a colicky baby settle down. Having something to do with your hands (steering wheel) also helps oneself settle a bit inside. If no car, then put baby in pram and walk around the block a few times with bub instead. Warmly wrapped of course. Same effect. Also, we’ve all been there with colicky bubs. Part of baby wrangling, and not the easiest part. People talk about changing nappies, but colic management is far tougher on the parent(s). And so is teething. Remember this difficult situation WILL end. Heart goes out to you. Stay focussed on what’s going right.

Remember that’s it’s ok to say to your partner “tag, it’s your turn”, and take a break from everything for a little bit…even stepping outside for a 5 minute reset can make a huge difference to your sanity. It’s important to look after yourself, or you’re no good to anyone. ;)

Last session with the Really Good Short Term Psych. It went so well even though I was procrastinating in bed until half an hour before the appointment. I feel a good sense of closure and clarity and appreciation. It feels good in my bones.

I am also infinitely grateful and relieved that he will write a letter summarising findings and recommendations to my GP and the psychiatrist I have an appointment with next week, because we covered so much and I feel he really got to the crux of what I’ve been having difficulties with my whole life. It’ll save me a lot of exhausting explanation and rehashing and will come with professional recommendations that might finally get me the help I need.

Weird thing happened in Coles Richmond Traders this morning when I was buying my lunch. The exit gate for the self-serve lane didn’t open. Had to show the receipt to the attendant to get the gates open to leave. I think this is Coles’ response to grab it & run ‘customers’. Might be a good idea to keep your receipt handy until safely out of there in future.
