There were hints from the beginning, especially if you read any of his books.

Then in 2008 he started blaming black people and diversity for all his problems, A major example is that he claimed that he wasn’t promoted at the bank he worked at because “the board wanted to promote a black guy”. The truth is he didn’t get the promotion because the bank was on the verge of collapse, and actually did fail 6 months after he quit (for not being promoted).

He then blamed black people and diversity for the failure of his tv show. The truth there is that it got 2 seasons, which is a lot for an adult cartoon. It was also on UPN, which is why it finally failed. No one watched UPN. Which is still not bad for something that was a side project for him.

Speaking of his little cartoon, if you ever watched it, there were a lot of creepy incel adjacent moments. Shit that would raise red flags today.

What were the early signs and red flags in the show? I was a fan of Dilbert for decades and never really noticed anything, and I was shocked a few years ago when it turned out this guy is so unhinged.

Yeah, same here - someone else said there were some incel tones in the show, which I don’t recall (and I’ve watched a few episodes fairly recently, as I ripped them for my plex server).

I remember he had this weird theory in the Dogbert New Ruling Class newsletter that gravity didn’t exist; it was just that everything in the universe was constantly expanding. At the time I took it as a thought experiment, not intended to be taken as a serious theory, but looking back now I wonder if that was an early sign of the issues that would follow.

I also remember him realizing that he was the PHB for a restaurant he owned, telling the staff how to run it despite he himself having no experience in restaurant operations. That seems like a good sign that he was still sane and rational at that time.

I also remember him predicting a Trump win early on in the election, while insisting he wasn’t a fan. That’s about when I stopped reading what he was writing, except for the strip.

There was a strip during the Trump presidency that directly referenced something stupid Trump did and mocking the Democrats’ reaction to it (I do not recall the exact strip or the stupidity that generated it). At that point I was like, “Welp, it looks like Dilbert is definitely well past its prime.” Dilbert had never gotten into politics before that I can recall, and that strip made me realize that he was completely out of funny ideas about work.

I only knew of Dilbert from the comic in the papers but I bought the series on DVD from the bargain bin years ago. It was meh at best. Some concepts don’t translate well to animation, and some of the messages were a bit off-putting .

His show was on UPN which had a lot of shows with black casts. When the show was canceled, he blamed the failure on the show leading in to Dilbert being the worst show ever made. Which is probably somewhat true. Shasta McNasty was one of the worst pieces of media in the history of media.

But then in 2020, when he went completely off the deep end, he said he was fired for being white and UPN decided to only cater to blank people.

Might not be that weird, I’d bet one leads to the other.

On a 100% anecdotal note, I had a liberal uncle that had a massive personality shift after a motorcycle accident, and became a massive piece of shit and trump supporter after his recovery. Would not surprise me to find that brain issues turn people into asshole conservatives.

Boomers and Gen X’ers had the highest exposure to fumes from leaded gasoline. Removing it in the 1980s literally caused the crime rates to plummet significantly year over year. That’s Trump’s stronghold demographic - people whose minds have been completely addled by lead poisoning over time.

It’s not that great. They are overpopulated and ruining the ecosystem, so we were paid to hunt them. But the meat is rancid, it’s wrought with disease, and even the pelts are worthless: 50/50 poly/cotton isn’t even suitable for rags or waterproof enough for tarps.

They have no natural predators either, and the are clogging the rural landscape. If we leave them to rot, they smell terrible and poison the soil and water table. In 2020-2022 we thought disease would wipe them out, but they banned birth control and are breeding faster than we can control.

There were programs to feed the homeless from various donations from hunters, but even the homeless reject them because they taste like cigarettes and stale Miller Lite. There’s plans to use their bodies for construction filler, but the are oily and unstable. In bodies of water their fat floats them to the surface like fatburgs one finds clogging sewers.

The whole program is a disaster.

I don’t disagree with Robert’s assessment that the whole “several years of complete isolation” probably broke something in his brain. Imagine being unable to speak to the degree that you refuse to go out in public, interact as little as possible, and just flat out stop existing to most of the outside world, for years.

He had a medical condition that left him more or less unable to speak that was only corrected through a risky surgical procedure that could have left him permanently mute.

Being unable to communicate with other humans in person is a different level of isolation, and I definitely believe it likely contributed to him breaking entirely.

That said, the rest of the BtB series mentioned in this thread also made it pretty clear that he sucked for a long, long time before that. It just went all gas no brakes at that point.

If we still had actual real investigative reporters in this country, they would pull up countless tweets and videos from some of these famous crackpots and go find them today and confront them. Call these asswipes out on their fear mongering posts about the COVID vaccine and Biden and a host of other things that were “definitely” bringing about the end of the world.

The biggest irony is that of all the things that WILL actually kill us and bring an end to how we live - stuff like guns and climate change - most of these idiots are totally quiet. Those are REAL issues we should be worried about, not how gay marriage will bring about the apocalypse or how Biden will send out death squads.

But Trump is untouchable. But too many of these other clowns that don’t have billions, still have to earn a living and interact with the rest of us.

Make it very costly for these people to fall down the loony right wing rabbit hole. Both in terms of lost wages and business dealings, but also make them be shunned by society.

Reporters asking for interviews with these people shouldn’t need to disclose what it is about ahead of time. Then in the interview bring up one stupid tweet of theirs after another.

Get this guy, and Sorbo (Hercules), as well as anti vaxx nutcase like Jemmy McCarthy and so many others. It sickens me when I see that she has been accepted by society and she’s on some popular show on NBC with the masked singers.

Another example of an effect associated with fascism that I like to refer to as “weakling soyboy supersoldiers:” the “enemy” must be simultaneously impotent and terrifying. We’re verrry scaarryyy, totally gonna be hunting them down for some reason! But also we’ll be dead from our own stupidity because we all took the COVID-19 vaccines. I guess we’re gonna be literal zombies? They’ve been looking for excuses to “hunt” “zombies” for ages now.

It’s kind of hilarious the hoops they are jumping through. I was listening to a recent episode of Knowledge Fight and they were covering a segment where Alex Jones was saying the reason that non-vacinated are getting sick is because the vaccinated are shedding but the reason so few people who got the vaccine are having issues is because they were actually given saline. If everyone received saline then where is all this shedding come from? It all falls apart of you look at it for half a second.
