Consider children.

  1. Lots of free time.

  2. Kinda dumb (sorry but that’s just how it is. It’s physics. It’s unavoidable.)

  3. Confident in their rightness. (see above)

  4. Reactive, get excited easily. (hormones and such)

… have you met adults though?

    • Tons of free time to comment (aka work)
    • Kinda dumb (gestures broadly)
    • Confident in their rightness (see above)
    • Reactive, get excited easily (Karen and Greg would like to have a word with your manager…)

I think it’s just people. People suck and are horrible.

As a child, I would say yes. Most adults don’t have enough time.

Because of conservation of mass, children must have as much dumb in them as adults do, but because they’re smaller, it makes up a higher percentage of their volume, so comparatively, the dumb has greater effect.

      Simple physics.

In reality children are just very small drunk adults. Without the intoxicant.

They can’t form really coherent sentences, they don’t care about social norms, and if you don’t put a stop to it they will talk your ear off about stuff only they could possibly care about.

They also throw up and hurt themselves a lot.

        Drunk.

I’d say there’s significantly LESS children, but they put out a LOT more content than older people.

Mentally, yes. But some of those children are in the bodies of middle aged men.

Honestly, I think it really depends on the spaces. Meme communities and video game communities? Full of kids. Politics and news? Maybe a few teens be trolling, but it’s mostly just dumb ass adults. Super crazy niche hobbies, especially those that take years of work like building your own electronics? If there are kids there, they are geniuses and you’d probably never know they’re a child.

I’m 38. I guarantee I probably sound like a kid when I’m gushing about a game or something I like, since everything I am into is generally thought of as for kids. Video games, comic books, Lego, etc. And I constantly equate other more serious things to these things I am more familiar with when I see parallels.

Not to mention autistic people are both extremely present online and in technical fields, but also can be perceived as child-like.

I would say Its full of everyone. But it does vary greatly between platforms. On mastodon the users are much older (think 35-45yo) compared to tiktok where it’s the 10-19 yo that are the biggest chunk of their users.

I dont think all social media users are children, or even the majority. But nearly all of them certainly seem to act like children online.

I am not quite sure why this happens, but if I had to guess I would say social media lends itself to very quickly becoming an echo chamber, so people only hear what they want to hear and only get compliments or likes or whatever. Before social media, people were forced to learn how to be civil and respectful to everyone, especially people you didn’t agree with. Nowadays, you just mute/block/hide them.

Why learn how to be respectful and hear people rightly tell you you’re wrong when you can just make yourself feel like a god by silencing everyone?

Children don’t really have that much free time than many adults, they have to go to school and all, and usually have to go to bed earlier. Beside, you only spend a small amount of your life being a child, so even assuming you’ve had access to social media since you were capable of writing, it’s likely that at the end of your life, unless you’ve suffered an early death, you’ll have spent more time as an adult on social media than as a shitposting child.

If you think children don’t have much free time, wait until you’re a parent. Free time becomes a mystical thing that you vaguely remember, but can’t imagine.
