Nowadays I often wonder if more than 5% of people go multi-user
Our family PC has one family user.
My wife and I both have our ownn logins on both computers, even though we tend to only use our own.
99% of machines use multiple users on their OS. Different users for different programs is a widespread Unix-like OS approach to security.
I think they meant separate accounts for different humans.
My Linux machines may have multiple users, but each only has one that you can log into from the lock screen.
I do on my laptop. Mostly so I can present with one user that has a clean browser history.
My main user has access to all my porn.
I have set one up for
sshthat only gets to access a shared folder.
Pretty useful
No worries.
Soon, millions will be sharing amainframesubscription cloud system, with just shell terminals priced at around half a year’s salary and requiring an “upgrade” every 2-3 years. It’s gonna be so much better dude because AI agents are gonna do all the work for us, freeing us from using the computer and allowing us to return to a life of hard manual labor
hey wait
Well someone has to build the datacenters!
priced at around half a year’s salary
So the current price of a MacBook adjusted for inflation?
Well, depends upon whose salary you are talking about.
Who even names someone Administrator? Poor kid.
True, just call them Sudo
My PC automatically logs in and the entire family uses that one account. I don’t need no security on top of that. You’re already in my house
Not since DOS v 6(?). Once Windows 3.11 came out my father had had to upgrade his machine enough times that we had 1 computer for each family member. We literally had hand-me-down computers instead of clothing.
I actually work with people who still have a “family computer”.
One guys doesn’t even have a computer at home, they have phones and iPads.
I worked with a software developer who dint have a computer. Didn’t have TV either. Didn’t even have a tablet. Just his phone and its data plan.
Blew my mind.
No, because the rest of my family had no interest in using it.
