I would prefer this over McDonald’s trash any day of the week. Apples, watermelon, bananas, kiwis? This isn’t like raw broccoli or something, it’s all fresh delicious fruit.

If you are less than about 20 the bitter flavor is too prominent for most people. Same reason younger folks don’t like unsweetened black coffee. It takes a while to grow out of the sensitivity to bitter flavors we are born with.

As an ungrateful little urchin, I would have been pissed ngl. As an adult tho, I can see that this is so freaking sweet and cool.

“No, my son can’t come out and play today. He hasn’t finished his lunch transfats for the third day in a row and is grounded until he learns to appreciate the empty carbs I work hard to put on the table.”

It’s so funny that kids often don’t like fruit. Like, “no I want my sugar without chewing! How dare you make me chew. Fiber bad, candy good.”

If you have kids, try cutting sticks of cucumber and carrots. Serve them in a bowl next to a bowl of candy. See which gets eaten first.

Is it true or just a stereotype? My kids love fruit. We go through probably 6kg of fruit a week, half of that is bananas and the rest is a mix of all sorts.

They obviously love candy too but they don’t complain about fruit.

Vegetables on the other hand… Fiber without (much) sugar is offensive.

        Vegetables on the other hand

A dietician once explained to me that children are extra-sensitive to bitter flavors like those of vegetables, and this sensitivity grows milder with age, so their special aversion is only natural. I recall feeling extremely hostile to vegetables then at some age feeling shocked that I no longer knew what the fuss was about & could appreciate them more.

Blanching those vegetables to subdue the bitterness may be especially important for a kid’s palate.

I suppose it depends on the kid. Fruit seemed like a punishment to me when I was younger, and then when I got older I wondered how I could have been so ridiculous.

Maybe I disliked it because “the man” wanted me to eat it because it was healthy. Maybe the rebellious kids are the ones who hated fruit, but not because of the taste.

I liked fruits occasionally, until a kindergarden teacher forced me to eat an apple with worms. Since then, I have an extreme aversion to most fruits, except banana and citruses.

It’s also possible that in places like school lunches they get the cheapest possible thing whereas you can choose quality food as an adult

I loved specific fruit as a kid. Bananas, grapes, and watermelon? Hell yeah. Apples and honeydew? Death glare for suggesting it.

I and my sibling also got fiendish for salad and fresh vegetables but hated frozen.

I’d wager that just like with adults, every kid is different.

For sure. One of my kids cites broccoli as a favourite food.

Apple’s are meh with my kids but slice them and spread them with peanut butter with some raisins and they love them (a variation of bugs on a log).
