Also, is there a good app for iPhone for it? I tried out Vernissage and it’s nice in some ways and confusing in others.

Never had an instagram account, but I have been uploading pictures to PixelFed. Nobody really comments or likes my stuff, but it’s more about curating some photos online that I can send someone a link to for fun on occasion.

Have you considered posting them on Mastadon too? You might get some interaction with such a greater userbase.

If you’re using relevant hashtags, then anyone browsing/following those hashtags would see the PixelFed posts on Mastodon anyway.

But you could create a Mastodon account and boost the Pixelfed posts for additional exposure as well.

This is only true if the mastodon instance in question has gotten copies of the post—if nobody on an instance follows your pixelfed account, and nobody on an instance follows an account that boosts posts from your pixelfed account, then (with a few exceptions) the post won’t appear in that instance’s Federated feed or that instance’s hashtag feeds

I like this approach to social media.

That’s so cool that you can import your photos from instagram. I’m always impressed by things like that. And yeah. It seems like Instagram is 95% ads and “Suggested content” or whatever. It’s really frustrating.

I’ve signed up for it. I didn’t use Instagram much at all and deactivated my account 3-4 years ago now so I don’t expect I’ll use Pixelfed much, but from what I’ve seen so far I would increase my usage of it if followed hashtags appeared in your feed.

Maybe I’m missing something, as I said I’m new as shit to it, but following people has them show up in my feed, following hashtags seems to resort in me having to just fuck myself. If that ever changes I’ll play with it some more.

I have the exact same complaint. From what I see you can browse followed hashtags in the “Discover” tab but even then - it’s showing the feed per hashtag, so you have to click each individual one to see the tagged posts and you can’t browse a feed based on all followed hashtags. This is very impractical, and I basically stopped browsing pixelfed due to this.

(edit: also just discovered that comfort_zone already said this, for some reason other replies weren’t visible at the time)

I just discovered that on the web interface, you can see posts under a followed hashtag by going to “Discover” on the menu, then “My Hashtags”, but they don’t seem to sync from pixel.social (or whereever) to an app you’re using.

For iOS, Vernissage doesn’t seem to support hashtags, but in Tusker you can add the hashtag in the app, then see related posts by tapping “Explore” and then selecting the hashtag from your list that’s displayed. Or you can also pin in to the top as a custom timeline by tapping the setting button at the top on the main screen, and adding your hashtag from there.

Which… I guess may make more sense than putting them in the Home feed to prevent tag abuse?

Hmm…so on that Discover>My Hashtags page, just on the website. I’m following a good dozen-or-two hashtags…I only seem to have three appear on that My Hashtags page at a time. And at random. What the fuck lmao.

huh, confirmed. I added 4 hashtags and it only displays 3.

Joy of software in development, I guess. Looks like there’s also a bug, in that sometimes after I follow a hashtag, I have to reload the page with F5 because it doesn’t do anything when I click menu options.

I signed up for it and have Pixelfed installed on my Android phone. I was planning to use it as a replacement for Imgur when I need a quick image hosting site to share a picture from.

No. All instances I’ve tried over the years have been dead or full or not accepting new users otherwise.

Since Flickr was killed, I’ve been hoping to find a working photo community or even just some gallery space. Or even a static generator I could use. Haven’t found anything usable.

pixelfed.social and metapixl.com both have active communities and open signups right now. Main reason to use metapixl.com afaik is larger file sizes are allowed (26mb vs 15mb)

edit: and you can upload 20 images to a collection on metapixl.com, instead of only 10 on pixelfed.social

also metapixl.com is based in Finland, and has some specific rules regarding content illegal in Germany etc, so they probably drop ban hammers on certain groups of abusive people harder than other servers might.

however, found the main trade-off is that pixelfed.social gives you 7GB of storage, while metapixl.com gives you only 4GB.

No problem! You can see details for all servers here

          https://pixelfed.org/servers

but be aware that some details are outdated, and you won’t know the actual file sizes allowed, number of photos in a collection, etc, until you’re on that server’s main page under the “About” tab. For instance metapixl is listed there as allowing 50 photos per collection, but that was downgraded to only 20.
