Beyond this, they’re just zeroing in on variables such as volcanoes, weather patterns, ship emissions, clouds, etc. So that is apparently what the somewhat misleading headline characterizes as a “mystery”.

But avian flu outbreaks require them to cull (kill) large numbers of egg-producing chickens, so it’s basically a supply-and-demand issue – hence the price spikes.

The price spikes are driven by avian (bird) flu.

There have been several outbreaks here in the States over the past year or so and we’re in the middle of yet another one.

I was able to get a dozen large eggs for about $1.60 in October; now they’re at least twice that.

But we need to get those egg prices down!
