Yeah, I just had my phone the whole time. It turns out that completely cutting people off from their support network doesn’t promote mental wellbeing.

Norah (pup/it/she)@lemmy.blahaj.zoneto Mildly Infuriating@lemmy.world•Baby dies after California mom leaves him in car to get lip filler on 101-degree day, police sayEnglish41·2 天前Now the 20-year-old mother has been charged with one felony count of involuntary manslaughter and two felony counts of willful cruelty to a child, according to court records.
Is it not a specific crime in California/US to leave a child locked in a car?? We don’t fluff around with that in Australia. Also have exceptions to property damage laws for bystanders breaking windows.
Norah (pup/it/she)@lemmy.blahaj.zoneto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Should there be "minimum" and "maximum" sentencing requirements in law? Or should courts have discretion? Which is better for a "justice system"?English7·9 天前I think there’s absolutely a middle ground where someone is currently a danger to society, but they’re capable of rehabilitation. However, we absolutely need to continue that work on the outside once it’s safe for them to be released if we want to reduce recidivism of violent crime.

Why or Why not?English91·9 天前I’m not making an argument for or against it, just seemed really self-centred bestie. You could say the same thing about asylum seekers, though the obvious advantage is the cultural diversity they bring and, you know, being a decent human being.

Norah (pup/it/she)@lemmy.blahaj.zoneto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What will replace digital era?English4·11 天前Sure, we don’t build with stone anymore, but there are an incredibly large amount of buildings and monuments built with stone that would last thousands of years, not merely hundreds. That’s really good news about Mt Rushmore though, I’m glad that eyesore won’t be around for many years to come.
Norah (pup/it/she)@lemmy.blahaj.zoneto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What will replace digital era?English8·11 天前Additionally our entire modern civilization would have basically no trace left after a couple hundred years, estimated.
Oh yeah, Mount Rushmore is totally just gonna be weathered away in a couple hundred years, and the pyramids have had extensive preservation efforts over the millennia…
Please engage your critical thinking skills.

FOSS licenses prevent that sort of thing from happening. Linux is already, by far and away, the most popular server OS so consumers moving to it isn’t going to make it worse.
I dunno, maybe be less of a hipster bestie?
Norah (pup/it/she)@lemmy.blahaj.zoneto Technology@beehaw.org•Only 1 in 3 Euro consumers are trading in their old phonesEnglish1·23 天前Yes, but most people trade their phones in after two to three years.
Norah (pup/it/she)@lemmy.blahaj.zoneto Technology@beehaw.org•Only 1 in 3 Euro consumers are trading in their old phonesEnglish2·24 天前But is it better than someone else getting use out of the phone for several more years? Because that’s what I’m suggesting, and it seems you’re arguing against a strawman…
Norah (pup/it/she)@lemmy.blahaj.zoneto Technology@beehaw.org•Only 1 in 3 Euro consumers are trading in their old phonesEnglish4·24 天前It’s the same as trading in a car versus selling it on the private market. It is ALWAYS a bad deal. It’s also not like if you trade it in that’s more environmentally friendly, because they just recycle it immediately, and most of the carbon emissions come from manufacture. They’re just trying to inflate prices by killing the second-hand market.
If you’re that worried about your data, screen who you’re selling it too. But unless you’re a journalist, politician or very high up in a business, you’re probably fine.

Why does that scare you? Your laptop would be designed to handle the thermal load of the CPU running at full tilt. As well, modern CPUs “boost” up to their full power level, so if they start to overheat they can “throttle” back down to prevent any issues. Worst case, they will shutdown before damage occurs.
Otherwise, yeah, running at 100% all day, every day can shorten a CPU’s lifespan. But doing it for a couple hours here and there is gonna be fine. You get similar usage if you’re rendering a 3D scene with blender, for example.
