One of the benefits of speaking a less popular language is that subtitles (downloaded separately since they’re rarely offered as a built-in option) are usually pretty accurate since they are submitted by a handful of native speakers instead of run through translation software. Semi-related, I used to translate song lyrics on lyricstranslate.com and would add context in a footnote for parts where a literal translation would not work well. It was annoying when users would submit translations that were obviously run through Google Translate and without any nuance or explanation.

Once my avocados weren’t ripe enough for a recipe I wanted to make on the day I was having guests over. I searched for tips to ripen or soften them more quickly. One of these tips was to wrap them in foil and bake them in the oven (the tip specifically said it would help with the texture and not the taste). Well, it took way longer than the tip said it would for the avocados to soften and they tasted like hot shit. It would have been better to just save them for another day.

It’s the beginning of the url to any real LinkedIn profile, which I guess is all the application form validates for. It wouldn’t allow me to submit the application when I tried to enter a written explanation that I don’t use LinkedIn.

For applications that have a required a LinkedIn url field, most of the time they will accept just “https://www.linkedin.com/“ as a valid url. I have never had a LinkedIn profile and have been called for an interview after doing that. Maybe it’s a standard template for some job application forms and/or the employer doesn’t care about it too much.

There is decaffeinated coffee if you’re looking to reduce your caffeine intake but still miss the process of making and drinking it.

I would like there to be more activity in a greater variety of communities, which I think will happen in time as the Fediverse grows. The main thing preventing me from posting my own interests and creations is a (probably excessive) caution about sharing personal/identifying things online, so I’m not going to criticize others for choosing the same. More users also tends to bring with it lower quality content, which leads to the next point:

As others like @[email protected] (who makes a lot of great comments in general) pointed out, there are a lot of political posts which seem more interested in venting their own frustrations and parroting popular opinions than having a constructive discussion and being receptive to different opinions. There is a lack of nuance. It’s possible to criticize the systems and people you do support without it meaning that you support the opposition, and it’s also possible you admit when someone you dislike makes a valid point without siding with them. You could even see a question like “how do I resolve this specific issue with Windows?” and one of the top responses will inevitably be something like “ew, you should be using Linux instead” and while I may not disagree, it does nothing to answer the question.

I’m not bothered by the gender ratios since it’s not a factor in how I interact with others, and users here are pretty quick to shut down rare instances of hostility towards a specific gender.

Lifestyle channels and blogs. This type of content is often very consumeristic. Unless it’s in an educational/informative context, I don’t have an interest in watching strangers have experiences that I could be having myself.

It does come off as insecure when someone makes a culture they have little connection to a large part of their identity rather than just showing an interest in it, but most of the time it’s harmless and not worth making a big deal over. I would loosely define being part of a culture as fitting in with other members of it: ability to express yourself in the native language and understanding its nuances, familiarity with customs and mentality, not feeling out of place when around natives/locals regardless of your ethnicity or ancestry.
