  • Literally these things have already been done with success. Your ignorance is not the definition of reality.

We know for a fact that housing people, keeping rent under control, and even offering free public transport all lead to a stronger economy and far better financial security for the 99%(which is even good for the 1% because it means people can actually buy their shit). This isn’t wishful thinking, it’s been tried in better places and the US is a perfect case study on why the centrist and right-wing ideas don’t work and have never worked.

You’re not a cynic, you’re poorly informed about the subject.

  • Yea, their really shitty or barely mediocre mayors? This is very different from times before and I think it’s ok to be excited. If it does end up going wrong you need to know that being a massive pessimist just for the sake of the world’s most depressing “win” is not a healthy way to live. Plus, nothing is really pointing to this being a bad thing except your own evident misunderstanding of the situation.

I wish him all the best, and more than anything I hope that the federal government doesn’t sabotage him and I hope that even if they do people will be able to understand that instead of going “wow he failed! No I’m not going to think about it harder than that.”

  • Cities are often where these things start. To underestimate a mayor’s impact, especially in a city like New York, is not the play. It also sounds like you aren’t even that familiar with his platform since it took me only one simple google to find a couple examples of a costed plan.

The US is plenty happy electing people with zero plan whatsoever, and what they do have is easily disproven nonsense that has never, ever worked. Major cities and economies in the world have done, with success, what Mamdani is proposing.

For the love of god, just be happy that the United Shithole of America is finally taking a step in the right direction. It’s going to be ok, and it pretty much can’t be worse since even trying and failing would be better than purposefully destroying everything for a quick buck.

  • See, I have no idea what to do with this idea that fits within the bounds of good ethics but I’m certain that there’s something deeply wrong with our species that gets worse the more isolated we can be without dying off. The further back you go the more likely being shunned for being an absolute piece of trash would lead to your death but now the most broken people can still proliferate and cause problems for everyone else without even really needing to leave their homes. I can think of a million better things to do than obssess over and relentlessly bully someone.

I’m glad that we’ve hit a certain point where more and more people are choosing to have higher standards, and maybe that will help, but holy fuck this is gunna take a while to sort out.

  • The issue I’m having is that yours is a country which sees the far right as something that will always exist with such power. I know the mechanics of it all, what I’m routinely shocked by is the back that the bar is on the floor and the country as a whole just cannot seem to get over it. The Democrats should not be the best you really have to offer, they should be your right-wing party and they should struggle but instead the USA handed a dictator the popular vote and a third of the place didn’t even participate either way.

It isn’t the existence of good people, it’s the complete domination by evil, or even just apathetic, people. I’m genuinely sorry that you’re suffering but, especially as a Canadian, it does not change my opinion about the landfill inferno that is the USA.

  • I feel less and less sad for people in the USA as time goes on because of exactly what you say. How did they not see it coming? HOOOOOW? And how did a third push for it, a third sorta try to help, and the other third maybe or maybe not just still doesn’t even know what’s happening?

  • If we’re were forcefully taken to another country and then had children at some point I would talk to them about the people left behind and where I came from.

That’s not how that works, especially when their cultures were specifically purged by the slavers. Your comment reads like the equivalent of saying “I would have just roundhouse kicked the gun away and saved the day” as if it’s the slaves’ fault for not giving their kids rich lessons on their history. It’s amazing that even some of it survived at all.

  • See, the thing is that everyone is capable of harbouring the same level of hate but oh my fucking god it’s really just the conservatives who only seem to have one response to it, which is brazen violence. Every single thing they do is always an unnuaced, scorched-earth piece of bullshit because they aren’t smart enough to fix anything or create a better alternative so they just throw it out while throwing a tantrum. Whether they’re killing people or departments or regulations, they always just assume things will be better if they let chaos take over because they are too moronic to make anything work no matter how clear the instructions are.

And all these death threats and acts of violence, attempts on the lives of politicians, screaming for deporting people they don’t like, they’re all great examples of how worthless these people are. No matter how worthless they are I’d still make sure they got healthcare in a better world while they’d keep wishing I was dead or mute until I said things they liked.

  • Except that what he’s doing is weird at every level and the military worship of the USA is well documented and bad. This dude is complaining that the military’s birthday is being co-opted by Trump and that’s the sign of facism but I’m wondering why there should even be anything to co-opt in the first place. It’s sucking off the military for so long that’s already clearly pushed the USA towards facism looooong before Trump being a douche did anything.

“Educated on national history”- oh, fuck off.
