We’re fast approaching the point at which there are no more bad ideas. But yeah for now, it’s best to try and prevent any major incident while not letting the authoritarians win. Countries do not come out the same way when either of those things happens. And the chance that it’s a change for the better is remote.

Right now the military leadership puts a lot of stock in the Constitution, so much so that the last time Trump tried to order them to go after BLM protestors, they not only refused the order, they then sent a memo to the entire force reminding them of the exact wording of their oath.

Desert ecosystems do exist. I guarantee you the water was not just being wasted. If nothing else there’s the aquifers and those are getting drawn down pretty fast these days. Anyone capturing water in the Southwest is contributing to the water crisis there.
It’s supposed to run off. Humans aren’t the only things that need water.
It was a sustainable oasis all on it’s own. Now it’s just a golf course.
There is no amount of right for a golf course there. It’s very existence is so wrong they cannot make it right.
Yup, sure, it increases biodiversity by using foreign plants in a monoculture. That grass wasn’t there before, so it’s more diverse now you see?
Well they’ve also denied an oasis to the entire local ecosystem. They can claim that golf course ponds fulfill the same purpose all they want but nothing wants to live next to golf carts and flying golf balls if it’s big enough to recognize it. People think deserts are wastelands but in reality that water is even more critical because animals can’t just pop a mile down to the next spot. Then there’s the effect on local plants, they’re diverting all of this water and they probably killed the entire local plant system.
Sustainability also means taking care to build in places you won’t impact as much. There’s no world in which growing grass in a desert is sustainable. It doesn’t matter how much technology you throw at it unless you figure out how to get everything you need from the air itself.

It’s a cold calculus but letting them kill someone first means the army has the moral and narrative high ground when the Army Rangers black bag these guys at 3 in the morning.
That’s the problem. They’re used to the stick. They’ll just bear it until they can escape reality again. It doesn’t help anyone, it just makes anti drug crusaders feel better.
To be honest going to jail isn’t a great thing though. That’s just creating more trauma that’s going to block any recovery. I agree it needs to be there at some point but this feels like we’ve just gone back to the war on drugs that didn’t work.
Why is that a bad thing? Why is having the resources to help them available a bad thing, and clean needles to prevent things like AIDs from spreading a bad thing? Not having that isn’t going to stop them. Having that means the ones who do want help can get it.

Yeah they did that policy completely backwards. The Portugal experiment works, but you have to actually do what they did and Oregon did none of the follow up work the Portuguese did.
But you shouldn’t be punishing homeless people for that, at best it’s some sort of venn diagram and critics want to make it look like a circle.
Then deal with the drug problem. But I’ll tell you right now that most homeless people do not have the money or time to do drugs unless they’re homeless because of drugs. The majority of homeless people work as many hours as they can and are constantly trying to become not homeless.
I know it sounds rational but that’s not a good faith argument from the governor. What he wants is to be able to force people into subpar living conditions instead of making shelters and temporary housing actually work.
It’s just another way for them to use the police while telling everyone they’re really actually helping.
While he blithely conflates nations with states as if that’s the only natural arrangement.
