We’ve seen that they have shifts at the helm and engineering/science/ops stations regularly, so putting them in charge really isn’t that big of a stretch if the senior staff need to be off-ship for the more important role of the mission. They’re basically babysitting the Cerritos and fending off hails from Starfleet.
Lockely@pawb.socialto Star Trek Social Club@startrek.website•Episode Discussion | Star Trek: Lower Decks | 4x09 "The Inner Fight"English21·2 years agoTo play it all out: why the heck is Nick Locarno flying around in a little ship capable of disabling the systems on larger warships, transporting(?) the ships and crews to some planet while leaving wreckage behind?
He’s not. He’s making deals with the lower deckers of those ships to make it look like his ship can do all that. They say in the episode that the lower deckers of the kidnapped crews are disabling the shields and weapons. Then he makes off with the crews and some of their technology for reasons yet unknown, abandoning the command staff on planet Knife Rain to fend for themselves.
It’s really wild that they straight up nuked CS:GO for this and it both performs worse on higher end machines (reports of stuttering when ragdolls activate or shaders load in are rampant) AND it’s missing the casual war games modes like Arms Race.
It’s definitely both. A lot of folks don’t understand that insects and shellfish are similar, and I’ve yet to see “product may contain insect meal / aggravate shellfish allergies” on things that have crickets or are processed in facilities that handle insect meal. So, the FDA likely needs to catch up. But, it’s also a cheap filler protein that’s easily grown, and companies are cheap bastards, so it’s going to slowly find its way in and push out more expensive protein options.
I do sincerely worry about insects being added as filler materials as time goes on. I have a shellfish allergy, and the same allergens that exist in the shells of shellfish also exist in most insects.

I’d never use it for work. Anyone entering proprietary company information into it should get a verbal shakedown by their company’s information security officer, because anything you input automatically joins their training database, and you’re exposing your company to liability when, not if, OpenAI suffers another data breach.

Star Trek is a place to tell stories. Some of those stories involve weird shit. “Weird,” as Janeway says to Kim after he comes from a cloned version of the ship where everyone he knows and loves just died in a self-destruct explosion, “is part of the job.”
Lockely@pawb.socialto Star Trek Social Club@startrek.website•Episode Discussion | Star Trek: Strange New Worlds | 2x06 "Lost In Translation"English6·2 years agoAs we all know, operational security is Starfleet’s #1 priority.
I have to imagine there’s a seedy bar in San Francisco where all the Chief Security Officers meet up to bitch about how no one ever listens to their recommendations but its their asses who get chewed out when the ship gets so easily taken over on a weekly basis.

The emptiness was likely part of the point with this species.

It’s meant to be a vehicle for progressive, egalitarian, humanist ideals. It dares to see the world as a better place without the chains and vices of greed and capitalism and bigotry.
It’s not popcorn sci-fi. It’s a surprisingly deep show meant to make you confront biases and prejudices you may not have even realized you had.

The idea that everyone likely to give the command to go to warp needs to have their own catchphrase is unsustainable.
I’ll give you Kirk and Sisko, but Janeway absolutely did. Whereas Picard had “engage” and “make it so,” Janeway had “Do it.” It wasn’t always her ‘warp’ thing, but it was certainly her go to phrase for finishing an order.
