News@lemmy.world•Trump directs Pentagon to 'use all available funds' to pay troops during shutdownEnglish
16·1 month agoI have some thoughts:
The fact that government shutdown prevented federal workers from being paid (a huge portion being the military) was a large portion of the Democrats’ leverage as public sentiment decreases the longer the shutdown persists. If the military is able to be paid, the shutdown will certainly continue as there is less pressure on either side to agree.
The military is able to operate on a limited basis with unobligated/emergency funds, but is not ‘funded’. If the pool of available money is used to fund personnel, it will certainly reduce readiness as pre-planned activities will not have funds to proceed or for emergencies. There is also certainly not available funds to repeat this multiple times.
In FY 2024 the DoD’s total budget was about $873.5 billion, and compensation for active‑duty, reserve and retired troops accounted for roughly $191.9 billion – ≈ 22 % of the total budget.
That means this move will cost about almost $16 billion per month assuming everyone including retirees are paid. The Pentagon has identified about $8 billion of unused research‑development, testing and evaluation money from the previous FY that can be redirected, but that doesn’t seem to be enough and again, a one time use.

10·2 months agoI honestly feel like good people are in short supply. Maybe it’s just a truth that since no one is perfect, we must accept ones faults.
Should we judge others by who they were, who they are, or who they will be?
On what metric should we boost our leaders? Those who get stuff done? Those who share a similar sentiment and belief?
I’m disappointed in the direction Starmer has gone from where we thought he would take us.
His actions got him where he is. Should we look for leaders who will offer hope despite where they came from?
Can we move on from past transgressions on the hope that a better future lie ahead?

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Do kids these days even have textbooks, or is it all on Chromebooks?English
101·3 months agoYeah, that’s the balance required. I think it’s important to learn how to operate in an analog world first and not until after appreciating how to navigate the world to use more modern techniques.
Calculators were not allowed in my math classes growing up and I think that allowed better understanding because I learned processes. I hated it and snuck my calculator at times regardless, but come test time I had to do maths by hand.
I see the same problem with control + f and now with generative AI. I fear a growing brain drain from not learning foundations properly. I believe the use of advanced tools should be earned.
