If the book on how this incident was a template for future US policy was too much reading, here’s a wikipedia article.

If you want an example of such a system working well or at least less openly corrupt and distainful of the average person, ask some Cubans (not gusanos) about their experiences with representation. If you want an example where the average person feels pretty disconnected from the party and like their voice is completely drowned out by moneyed interests and nepotism, talk to some Vietnamese.
Alcoholicorn@mander.xyzto News@lemmy.world•Trump: 'A Lot of People Are Saying Maybe We'd Like a Dictator'2·3 days agoChina has elections though, the average term length for president is like 5 years, they’re just unlikely to replace a leader if things are going well and the leader is perceived as responsive.
If they reelected Hu Jintao while corruption festered and capitalism seemed to escape its cage, how many of the national congress would have been seen the next one?

FR though, dating dudes is so much more straightforward.
No way is that accurate, the only time I saw toilets without bidets in Japan were in public toilets in poorer areas, trains, places that hadn’t been renovated since the Showa era, and “someone bought an old building for pennies and illegally remodeled it”. I am happy to report Vietnam is quite high as well.
I think it also functioned as an anti piracy measure

Kinperor is asking if you or anyone else has any better data on how the people living in the former Ukraine territories feel.
This shouldn’t be too much of an ask given how low the confidence is the Russian-held referendum and how certain yall seem to be that predominantly ethnically Russian people in those areas are yearning for Ukrainian freedom.
Personally, I would be quite surprised if the people who have been oppressed and bombed both sides have anything but disdain for either.
Alcoholicorn@mander.xyzto World News@lemmy.world•Trump reportedly to back ceding of Ukrainian territory to Russia as part of peace dealEnglish27·11 days agoWhat misinformation? Are you saying there was no referendum? Or that those regions aren’t mostly populated with ethnic Russians? Or that Kyiv doesn’t want to retake those regions?

The right dominates the online ecosystem.52·11 days agoThey are fulfilling their obligations under the convention on genocide by using every means at their disposal to stop a genocide. Or were you under the impression they were risking their lives and what little wealth they have to enforce a blockade because they hate boats and love the feeling of terror?
I understood them as expensive toys, like an old Italian project car that’s fun to tool around in in nice weather, but when you need to get to work, you drive your car, but experiencing its role in SEA completely change my perspective. They can be cheap, boring, functional machines, with a suprisingly high capacity. that even a dog can perform basic maintenance on and keep running for decades, that work just fine in rain.
