So I got her watching a few animes in the past year, our first was beastars, she liked it, then full metal, also one she liked, I showed her some space dandy but she wasn’t totally interested, and it’s been tough to find one that really hooked her. Then I found it, one day of just “eh whatever I’ll put this on” we started romantic killer, and it’s surprisingly really good. I like it but she loves it. Shell literally play it as her comfort show, I must have seen the season 3 times over now.
Now this is great and all, but I still wanna show her more things she’ll like, any ideas? I was thinking toradora is a long the same vein but so far my suggestions have fallen kind of flat and I haven’t really seen much slice of life, So I’d like to see what you all think
Here are some of my favorites. Some are not comedy and some are not romance though:
- Bocchi the Rock! (Comedy / Music / Slice of Life)
- My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU (Drama / Romance / Slice of Life)
- Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai (Drama / Mystery / Romance)
Note: There is also a movie that I highly recommend to watch if you like the series. A second movie was recently released as well but I haven’t seen it. - Violet Evergarden (Drama / Fantasy / Slice of Life)
Yes to Violet Evergarden. Think it’s one of those anime that people who don’t like anime will like, since feels more grounded in presentation and the animation is really good too.
From last season:
- Skip and Loafer
- Loving Yamada at Lv999
Some other recent, “non-standard”, romantic comedies that might appeal:
- Komi-san Can’t Communicate
- Tomo-chan Is A Girl!
- Teasing Master Takagi-san
- The Dangers In My Heart
- Loving Yamada at Lv999!
If the “messed-up magical contract” setting is what she likes, check out:
- Magical Girl “Oré”
- Madoka Magica
- Revolutionary Girl Utena
Toradora is quite good but I recall it being more serious. Some others like that:
- His and Her Circumstances
- Horimiya
- The Ancient Magus’s Bride
- Insomniacs After School
As an aside, if you haven’t seen it already, Heavenly Delusion is just a fantastic show that everyone should check out, inventive and gorgeous.
Horimiya is like…one of the greatest romance animes of all time. My wife and I liked it a lot!
My wife also loved The Ancient Magus’s Bride.
On your now about seriousness, it’s not a deal breaker but it’s a fine line for her. She loved Fullmetal but could only watch a bit at a time because it was so story driven and intense. That being said, some of her favorite moments from RK are the intense parts and the character development
This person knows their slice of life. I’d add Skip and Loafer, but I’m a manga reader only. Heard the adaptation is good though.
Heavenly Delusion should come with a trigger warning. It’s a fantastic show, but there are some very uncomfortable scenes towards the end. Idk how to spoiler tag here, but you can Google if you’re concerned.
Want a really obscure recommendation: Yamada’s First Time: B Gata H Kei which might sound really not like what you’re looking for when reading the synopsis, but is actually a really solid rom-com that doesn’t follow the cookie-cutter tropes. Well, it does but only to a degree.
Then there is Ore Monogatari!! which I consider being one of the most refreshing rom-coms since they don’t spend all season on getting to the relationship but are developing that relationship instead.
Lastly, my favorite rom-com series is Working!! which is just perfection that got even better with each season.
B gotta h Kei was one of my firsts and favorites, i agree its a good rom com but idk if she’ll really enjoy all the fanservice
I don’t particularly remember it having fan service, outside of what fits the story. But it’s been 13 years since I’ve seen it, so it might be just my nostalgia googles. But that just tells me it’s time for a rewatch once I’ve whittled down the anime of the season to a manageable amount.
On Netflix,
- Blue Period
- Campfire Cooking in Another World
- The Great Pretender
- Horimiya (New season just started too)
- Komi Can’t Communicate
- More than a Married Couple but Not Lovers
- Spy Family
I’ll second blue period. Definitely makes you think and see artistry in a different way.
Sounds like she needs to be eased into anime with shows that aren’t too violently weeb and approachable.
BNA (in case yall furries)
Kings Ranking (masterclass animation and full of love)
Welcome to Demon School Iruma-kun (excessive fun and friendship)
Mob Phycho (violent goodness)
Made in Abyss (in case you want to break her)
Ponyo (Or literally anything from Studio Ghibli [I mean literally anything])
Horimiya is a modern day classic slice of life. Spy x family is good and wholesome. If you want a slice mystery murder Oshi No Ku(warning for suicide and death) . If you want to cry To your eternity(lots of death). Violet evergarden is a great. And I recommend everyone Mob psycho 100
These are more serious:
These are less serious:
I considered recommending Angel Beats but, uh, I found it pretty depressing.
There is nothing better than a good drama.
- Hyouka (Mystery, Romance, Slice of Life) Good mystery
- Katanagatari (Action, Adventure, Romance) Very unique artstyle
- Toradoa is really good too, it’s a good choice
- Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun (RomCom, Slice of Life) Couple gets together in ep 1 or 2
- Nisekoi (RomCom, Slice of Life, Harem)
- Tsurezure Children (Comedy, Drama, Romance, Slice of Life) Short stories about a few diffents couples, it is sooo good.
If you don’t mind it not being a romance show, I would honetsly say Attack on Titan, nearly anyone can get hooked on that show.
The only recommendation I can think of at the moment (at least that haven’t been mentioned yet) is Kaguya-sama: Love is War (admittedly I’ve only seen S1 since that was all they had on Hulu but it was one of my favorites)
Also maybe Ouran High School Host Club but it’s been a while since I’ve seen it so I don’t remember much
I second Kaguya-sama. Easy watch with that perfect amount of humor/drama/romance.
Although you gotta find a way to watch S2 and 3, banger after banger in those seasons.
I haven’t actually seen Romantic Killer, but from the sound of it it seems to have the same vibe as Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-Kun. It’s personally one of my comfort romcoms, with very light-hearted but funny humor and more focus on the comedy aspect of romcoms. Used to be on Netflix but I guess it got taken off recently.
Oh, man, totally forgot Nozaki-kun. It’s especially good because it’s a rom-com that spends most of its time deconstructing rom-coms!
Usagi Drop
A wholesome empathizing masterpiece.
I take it that you didn’t read the manga?
Yes
It’s been said before but I’ll say it again for engagement on Lemmy :)
Spy Family would be my recommendation in case you haven’t seen it. Clannad is also a good one
Fruits Basket for the romance drama.
Spy x Family for the lighthearted, wholesome fun.
Demon Slayer for the action.
Second on Fruits Basket (specifically the 2018 remake), it’s one of my favorite romance anime shows of all time.
