YouTube is testing a popup for non-Premium users that urges them to disable adblockers with a countdown timer. It emphasizes the features of YouTube Premium so its creators can be paid.
There are a few video producers I care about such as Undecided with Matt Ferrel and Veritasium. There are also privacy advocates, linux people, controversial political opinions, and unhinged conspiracy trash. So, there’s good, bad and ugly stuff to watch. Obviously a lot less than what YT currently has to offer, but spending less time watching videos is probably good for me in the long run anyway.
Actually I’m beginning to see a trend here. Mastodon feels a lot like Twitter in the early days. Lemmy feels a lot like the way Reddit used to. Odysee is a bit like YouTube once was a very long time ago.
It’s been a very long time since I tried peertube. At the time the transfer rate was approximately 1 b/s, so couldn’t really watch anything at all. I should give it a go again to see if it has gotten any better.
If ublock origin stops working, I’ll just hop over to odysee. Problem solved.
How is it over there? Are a decent number of creators uploading to that platform?

I’ve cut down on YouTube a lot by deleting the app and only accessing it via the web browser.
I’m genuinely happy with that decision. This Reddit thing has really made me realize how much I don’t need all this social media and stuff.
Quick question: is odysee open source? And have you tried peertube?

I‘ve only tried it for an evening but it’s virtually no different to google shitfest except no blocker required.
I actually looked into hosting one of the instances but it was a bit of a rabbit hole.
