i left reddit for good today with their obvious attempt at controlling the narrative like the rest of big social media. long live the lemmy federation

It’s not so much the guy they’re afraid of, they’re afraid of what his actions could spur others into repeating. They’re afraid of what can be done to them if multiple people follow suit. And y’know what? Maybe that’s what we need now. Enough of us fearing them, and them fearing us. We don’t need them. They need us. And it’s well past the time to give them a reminder of that. Through force, if necessary. Preferably without bloodshed, but at this rate it doesn’t look good. They’ve shown time and again they don’t care about how many of us lose our lives to preventable circumstances, so it’s time to MAKE them care again.

Remember, they’re not threatened by Luigi. They’re threatened by the fact that so many people love Luigi and what he stands for.

This. He’s basically a martyr at this point.

Luigi reminded the people that we have power. We don’t need to be subservient to the whims of corporate interests. We can choose to go a different way. He’s in jail but millions of people who are inspired by him are roaming free, any of which could become the next Luigi, and wack some CEO who is devoid of empathy or ethics (which is all of them). Anyone could be the perpetrator, anyone could be the target.

It’s like a large chunk of the USA is now part of anonymous. Expect us.

(And for anyone who binds anonymous with 4chan, you don’t understand anonymous)

Let’s be real, all it takes is one person struck by tragedy who no longer has anything to live for choosing to go out this way rather than going quietly. Maybe their kid was killed in the nth school shooting of the year. Maybe they’re dying of cancer due to delayed treatment. Maybe they’re financially ruined by medical debt. Like you said Luigi reminded people of what is possible, and there’s plenty of tragedies that can be correctly attributed to the choices of the rich that happen every day

Not sure. I’m still surprised things are so calm, considering the widespread availability of guns in the population.

They have successfully jailed the alleged killer. They are trying to also imprison the idea he represents.

It’s the Luigi overpowered as can be.

Naw, ever see A Bug’s Life where the Crickets only bully the ants because it’s to distract them from realizing a thousand ants are stronger than one cricket?

I hear you. They banned me permanently for being pronouncedly anit-Facist anti-Trump anti-Musk. Reddit is a joke. A decidedly right joke.

isnt it already, only allowing some center right content to be on it to “seem balance” but allowing right wingers to astroturf all the subs.

People up voting Luigi posts got banned? Yeah I’m glad I’m not on there anymore. Lemmy seems like my kind of community. Honestly feels like how reddit used to feel like. Good honest people.

upvoting is ridiculous, but from what ive heard another site, Upvoting, in general flags your account if its new on certain subs, i think they are just expanding it to sitewide.

They’re receiving warnings and stuff it’s been pretty fucky the last week with them so I’m out. I’ve heard of some bans for some odd stuff but I suppose some of it is hearsay. Yeah I’m really digging Lemmy it feels much more like the earlier internet where algorithms didn’t dictate everything and you can just find stuff organically

They are afraid of copycats, but they had months to try and stop them by just loosening their strangle hold on society. I heard another exec got offed last month in his home in Oregon. it’s starting

Their strategy instead is to announce wars and terrify every 20 minutes so that the news cycle is too full of other crisis to remember this guy.

The thing is, I think our attention spans are too cooked to be overwhelmed like that anymore. A new crisis every 20 minutes? I can get through 40+ tiktok videos in that time, and half of them will be about something they are trying to terrify with (trans rights, science defunding, bird flu, racism, palestine, the oligarchy, luigi, etc.)

The old media can’t keep up, but I’m in my mid-thirties and even my old brain can handle being pulled in dozens of directions and still think about/remember Luigi, unprompted, multiple times a day.

      Well he was super violent.

      and Jesus went up to Jerusalem, 14And found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the changers of money sitting: 15And when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers’ money, and overthrew the tables;

Upvoting that probably gets a ban now.

I like the line by Killer Mike (“Walking in the Snow”), which I think he says he got from Dick Gregory:

“All of us serve the same masters, all of us nothin’ but slaves / Never forget in the story of Jesus, the hero was killed by the state”.

        Powerful stuff.

Edit to add: honestly that whole track rips and is super relevant right now.

I don’t know if that’s evidence he was super violent. I might guess this story was made up to prevent people of business stealing power and influence from church leaders.

It was probably more to do with the destruction of the Temple that was there when Jesus was alive but destroyed 40 years later, there are many nods to this in the gospels, because it’s trying to contextualize current events with the Christian religious movement, it was important that Jesus was prophetic, and him driving out vendors from the temple is a strong image, here is the messiah, rejected by the Jews he here to save, and he correcting them, telling them to remove vendors from temple ground, and they refused to listen, so God allowed the temple to be destroyed.

Or maybe it’s more the image of the sacrificial animal’s symbolic of the Jews being chased from their homelands by a whip god controls turned against them for their sins.
