Ah yes, because the Tachiyomi thing worked out so well. It’s not like dozens of forks popped up.
Kakao is not gonna get more money out of this, because something new’ll pop up. Also because Kakao does a lot through Tapas, which uses an awful and expensive coin system. Closing down MangaDex likely won’t bring in more paying customers.
MangaDex is great for discovering new manga. So much of my purchased manga and manwha is because I found it on MangaDex. Probably the majority of my collection tbh. It’s also sometimes used by legit companies and comic artists to post their stuff.
That’s why shutting down the platform does no good. Those who officially upload stuff there should raise hell on anyone who tries to shut MangaDex down. There’s already the DMCA as someone mentioned if they want to remove pirated manga.
The true motive, I perceive, is certain companies don’t like non-walled garden platforms. Therefore, it’s not anti-piracy enforcement, but anti-competitive behavior.

Absolutely. They’re unable (probably unwilling too) to provide a better experience than MangaDex, so instead of spending funds for providing a better experience, they have to resort to this.
If they are indeed going after MangaDex they are shooting themselves in both feet. MangaDex is the one site that pretty much immediately reacts to DMCA claims by publishers and authors. If they lawyer them out of the space the void will be taken up by entities that play less nice.
…the company’s efforts appear to be yielding results, as evidenced by the successful takedowns and ongoing legal actions against major piracy sites.
I just wonder who they’re trying to convince here.
There have been piracy sites on the internet pretty much from day one.
And the biggest ones have gotten taken down pretty much from day two.
And new ones keep popping up.
What happened to Tachiyomi? I still use it.
As mentioned by OP Tachiyomi is no longer being worked on. Mihon, one of the main replacements/continuations, can be found here (official site) or here (code repo with builds).
To avoid the issue that killed Tachiyomi Mihon doesn’t ship with the extention list included. You’ll have to download this file and import it from the app. After that you can import your backup from Tachiyomi and use the new app as usual.
Thanks for the reply. I had no idea. I probably won’t need to download it soon since all of my current reads already fully downloaded, need to finish them first. I love that they cannot easily kill open source. Mihon seems nice.
No problem. Mihon is pretty much Tachiyomi+ so if you ever decide to switch you should feel right at home and if not, Tachiyomi should still work fine unless there are some bigger extention changes. No need to worry about it for now, especially since you’re well prepared with your backlog.
That’s good to hear. Tachiyomi extensions still work, at least the ones I’ve downloaded. Apparently it cannot download any now. I’ll continue with Mihon when I upgrade to LineageOS 21. Thanks again for the heads up.
The developers got sued. The extensions will keep in working for a while but Tachiyomi development has stopped. Upgrade to Mihon or the other fork of Tachiyomi (forgot the name).
There are a few forks which seem to be either endorsed or recommended directly on mihon’s site.
I personally use tachiyomiJ2K.
Thanks for the reply. It seems I’ll have to switch to Mihon some time later.
Mihon and Extensions .
Thanks, added to my starred. It’s already at almost 9k starred, really nice.
SSssssshhhhhh
Good luck, you idiots are going to need it.
Have fun with your game of whack-a-mole, guys. Eventually, you’ll realize that the money you’re pumping into it is just wasted.
